Madison Part 2
Part 2
Step 1
Nick is a hypocrite living in his world. He claims to be an honest man. He thinks his friendship with Gatsby is sincere. But in fact, his company with Gatsby was based on Gatsby's money and his identification with Gatsby's idealism, so he was not an honest man at all. And I think that's evident from Nick's "romantic" relationship with Jordan baker, where Nick while resenting Jordan baker's dishonesty and disregard for others, is obsessed with her energy and sophistication. For the sake of this love, Nick tolerates what he hates most about Jordan baker and tries to immerse himself in love, ignoring the despicable feelings. This can also prove that Nick is a hypocrite living in his world. Although he is willing to help others, he will also tolerate and ignore some of the qualities he hates most when they appear around him.
Step2
So I want to emphasize again that the American dream is just a blank check from the government, because people will not pursue absolute freedom and equality, and no one will accept it, whether emotionally or financially. This is because everyone is selfish and may follow some moral rules when things do not involve themselves, but it is just not about themselves. The empty promise is that the American dream has been instilled in young people today, but not taught them how to do it, so people know, judge, but do not do it. In a word, the American dream is an Atlantis that can never be found. It only exists in people's minds, but it can never be found. That's why the American dream is a blank check.
Step 3
Because a young man like Nick, who is deeply influenced by the American dream, and the symbol of upper class, only takes the American dream as his criterion, but it does not affect whether he will follow the moral principles. Nick is the best reason why the American dream is an empty promise. As he said at the beginning of the article, "I am one of the few honest people I have ever known," he was not an honest man at all. When he was deeply immersed in his love, he chose to ignore the quality that the baker hated. I think it's also a kind of inequality, the best proof that the American dream is just an empty promise. No one lives up to what the American dream preaches unless it doesn't affect them. Because people from essentially greedy, selfish, I do not deny that some people are selfless. Still, most people are selfish, human nature has also led to the American dream is a blank check an absolute sense, is only on the words will not appear on the action of a will never be able to cash the check. I think from Nick's life; we can also find that the American dream is a blank check used by the government to stabilize society. People will only make judgments on it and create a phenomenon of a harmonious society. However, in essence, people's morality and ideas have not changed because of the American dream. Therefore, when things do not involve Nick himself, Nick is still following some of the principles, but once it happens to Nick himself, he will completely forget the moral principles he wanted to follow. I think Nick's ideas represent the ideas of the upper class. It is when things involve themselves that people become selfish and selectively forget and ignore all those good moral qualities. So I think Nick's behavior is the best proof that the American dream is a blank check from the government.
Step4
They have not fully achieved the American dream.
Step 5
I think the American dream need to be changed, because it is just a criterion, not have any real effect to the young people. I think the American dream needs to be more concrete, more powerful, more relevant to life, not just a broad statement of dispensable principles and goals that reach every level of people. Only in this way can the American dream be genuinely realized and realized.
Step 6
I think Nick is the American upper class now. They will lament the broken American dream, but they will also become the culprit of the broken American dream without any psychological burden. In the case of COVID-19, no one would want to pass up the opportunity to give someone else if they could get a priority test. Look at Nick again, although he has been influenced by the American dream and considers himself as a practitioner of the American dream. I think from his attitude towards love, if he sees COVID-19 happening to him, he will not hesitate to accept the priority of testing even though he will judge the unfairness of testing right. So I think Nick can be called part of my media example.
