Jeffrey Part 2
I think Gatsby is the embodiment of the American dream. He came from a poor family and did not receive much higher education, but he still succeeded through his own efforts.
The American dream is that one should have the chance to succeed no matter what one's background or education level.
Gatsby can connect to the notion of American dream in that he has achieved success regardless of his original economic and social status. Gatsby's American dream is doomed to be impossible to realize, because he did not surpass the disadvantages brought by his social status and could not eliminate the discrimination of the upper class against those born in poverty. To begin with, although Gatsby has accumulated a great fortune, he could still not deny the discrimination that others hold on him due to his low social status. For example, this discrimination is implicitly implied from the words and acts of Daisy’s husband. He holds negative and discriminative attitudes on Gatsby after knowing that his fortune was not achieved by himself and he is maintaining his fortune in an illegal manner. It is necessary to point that the method used by Gatsby to sustain his fortune was illegal which was totally the opposite of the essential promotion of the American dream. American dream promotes that people can achieve the upgrading of their personal social status by making efforts. However, Gatsby did not entirely imply the American dream due to the dark side of his money. He could not be fully respected by those people from the upper social layers, including Daisy. To explain it further, Daisy was not able to be together with Gatsby in that the social status of him was too low, and this discrimination has not changed even though Gatsby accumulated a great fortune.
I think Daisy would discriminate against Gatsby even if he got his wealth by fair means.Because they come from different backgrounds. To give them a chance, society needs to make fundamental changes. Society should not discriminate against a person's educational background, family or background. What should be paid more attention to is the individual ability of that person.Sometimes education and background do not represent one's ability. Eliminating these discriminations will give everyone with the American dream an equal chance to succeed.
One thing that Gatsby and my examples have in common is that they both try their best to change people's inner discrimination and finally realize their personal dreams.
